Enabling DMA access on you hard-disks increases overall performance. Here is how you do it in Windows Xp. Start --> Control Panel --> System --> Hardware --> Device manager --> locate "IDE ATA/ATAPI controller" and double click on Primary IDE Channel. In the Advanced tab select "DMA if Available" for Device 1.
