If you just installed Windows Xp you will notice that the only icon shown on the desktop is the Recycle Bin icon. You can the wheel known icons by right clicking on the desktop --> Properties --> click on Customize Desktop in the Desktop tab. Simply select the icons that you want to show on the desktop. You also have the option to change the default icon by clicking on "Change Icon...". When you are done click on OK.
